Te Waiariki, Ngāti Kororā, Ngāti Takapari Hapū-Iwi Trust 

Our Structure

Hurumanu is the name of our waka. It depicts the structure of the Hapū trust and provides a visual framework to articulate how the trust will be envisioned.

Hurumanu Te Waka

The waka is a metaphor for Te Waiariki wairuatanga and is a vessel that will transport our people into the future. The whetū (stars) presented here are symbolic of our vision, and strategic intent which will guide us in our journey as a hapū. Within the waka there and many roles that are pivotal to the survival and wellbeing of our whānau, hau-kāinga and Hapū, these are explained in more detail below

Kai-urungi / Navigator 

Important to maintain the right direction. Navigates and creates meaning and purpose amid uncertainty and creates a new paradigm where it is needed. Doesn’t leave anyone behind. 

Kai-hautū / Captain 

Role is to not jeopardise the mana of our people and keeps the waka safe. It is the ability to being in the present moment and being calibrated to the tohu and signs. 

Taurapa  

Provides strong governance and strategic direction. 

Ngā Kai-hoe

Keep the momentum of the waka going, they do the mahi. 

Kāhui Kaumātua 

Being able to respond and guide with wisdom and discernment as individuals and as a collective. 

Whānau (Uri) Whakatupuranga 

That our whānau and hapū are in the waka and moving forward together in the same direction. That they will thrive and have access to resources to ensure a high standard of living. 

TE TAURAPA O TE WAKA

Te Taurapa O Te Waka is the structure that symbolises the governance model that will be used for the trust. Te Taurapa provides the mechanism for effective governance with the intent to move toward a tino rangatiratanga approach. In principle, this approach will require a deep understanding of tikanga Māori and the ability to incorporate Māori values into the governance practices and processes.

Kāhui Kaumātua

This ensures that there is representation from kaumātua wisdom to inform decision-making processes and that there is transparency and accountability back to the hapū. 

To establish a robust governance structure, the following aspects are of utmost importance, collectively contributing to a strong Taurapa: 

Kia rangatira ai te whakaaro. (disciplined thought)

This principle emphasises the need for disciplined thinking and decision-making processes within the Taurapa structure. It involves thorough analytics, critical evaluation, and strategic planning to ensure informed and well-considered actions. By adhering to this principle, we can avoid impulsive or hasty decisions and make choices that align with our overall objectives. 

Kia rangatira ai te tū.

(disciplined people)

This principle emphasises the significance of having individuals who are disciplined, responsible and committed to upholding their roles and responsibilities within the governance framework. It entails fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism and integrity among all involved. 

Kia rangatira ai te mahi (disciplined action)

This principle highlights the importance of disciplined action, where the implementation of plans and initiatives is carried out effectively and efficiently. It requires clear direction, effective communication and efficient execution of tasks, ensuring that actions taken are purposeful, aligned with our goals, and deliver the desired outcomes.
